Mobile phones with a matte back cover
Matte
— a kind of intermediate option between a smooth shiny gloss and a corrugated surface. The matte surface usually does not have visible irregularities, but it almost does not shine and looks noticeably dimmer than the glossy one. At the same time, fingerprints and other contaminants are less visible on such a surface, and it slips less in the hands; and the lack of gloss is a virtue for those who appreciate a discreet design. The described properties are especially noticeable in plastic bodies (see "Body material (back cover)"). It is worth noting here that matte plastic panels are often made of a special material, the so-called "soft touch". This type of plastic, while hard on its own, feels soft to the touch and feels very secure in the hand. Metal cases are also often made matte, but the differences from gloss are not so huge — in particular, such a surface can still be quite slippery. The latter is also true for matte glass panels, which is why this material is rarely combined with this type of surface.
Note that some devices from this category are also available in versions with a glossy back panel (see the relevant paragraph).
