This option is most popular in modern smartphones, which is associated with a number of advantages. Firstly, due to the abundance of space on the rear panel, such a sensor can be made quite large — so that it immediately reads a sufficient fragment of the fingerprint, and the user does not need to move his finger across the scanner. Secondly, with the usual holding of a smartphone, it is very convenient to apply the index finger to such a sensor — you don’t even need to change the grip (and you can use any hand for this). Thirdly, the scanner does not take up space on the front panel, and you can at least allocate it entirely for the screen. With all this, this option has no noticeable drawbacks, and it is inexpensive.
