Such cards can be a good addition to the built-in storage of the phone: they are much cheaper in terms of gigabytes of volume, and you can choose the specific capacity and model of the card. In addition, removable cards make it easy to share data with other devices, such as tablets or laptops. On the other hand, memory cards work noticeably slower than built-in storage, and not every phone allows you to install applications on them. Thus, it makes sense to use such cards predominantly for multimedia content — photos, videos and music.

Also note that when buying a device with this feature, it's necessary to clarify the type of supported cards. So, the most popular microSD standard nowadays actually includes three formats — the original microSD with a capacity of up to 4 GB, the later microSDHC (up to 32 GB) and even more recent microSDXC (up to 128 GB and even more); if the phone supports one of new formats — it is compatible with older ones, but not vice versa. And some modern smartphones (predominantly by Huawei) use newer Nano Memory cards (colloquially — Nano SD).
