The series is set in a futuristic space setting where humanity must face an alliance of alien races known as the "Covenant." The main protagonist of most games is "Master Chief," John-117, one of the super-soldiers created under the "Spartan" program; he is accompanied by an assistant, the artificial intelligence "Cortana" (this is where Microsoft got the name for the real Windows voice assistant).The Halo series is primarily released for PC (Windows) and Xbox consoles, with some titles also available on mobile devices, but PlayStation is not supported at all. In fact, the main platform for the game is considered to be Xbox; the first part, Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), became one of the best titles for this console and is still considered almost a benchmark for fantastic console shooters in both single-player campaigns and multiplayer. As of 2019, the series has released 5 main games (with a sixth expected in 2020) and 8 spin-offs, including two parts of Halo Wars in the strategy genre.
