Initially, two series of games competed in this niche: NHL itself from EA Sports and NHL 2K, produced by 2K Sports. However, nowadays only EA Sports creations are available for desktop platforms, since the last similar game from 2K Sports was released back in 2011, and since 2014, the NHL 2K series has been released only for mobile devices.

NHL games are only released for PS and Xbox game consoles. Traditionally for such sports simulations, real hockey players and teams are included in the games. At the same time, a new game is released every year, which takes into account the changes that have taken place in the hockey world during the year, and also complements and improves the arsenal of techniques available to the player. It is also worth noting that in addition to traditional modes, NHL may also provide special game formats. For example, in NHL 18, the Threes mode appeared — a game according to simplified rules in the three-on-three format, and in NHL 19 — the Ones mode, where three hockey players play "each for themselves".
