Nowadays, the series includes about two dozen main games, as well as a large number of spin-offs.The main games in the series are in the genre of Japanese RPGs. Pokémon, from which the name is derived, are special creatures with specific abilities; capturing, training, and organizing battles between these creatures is the task of Pokémon trainers, one of whom is the main character of the series. This character travels through the game world, trying to collect all the available Pokémon; this is quite a challenging task, as even in the first game their number reached 151, and in subsequent parts, it has only increased.
An interesting feature of the main titles is that they are released in pairs, and each edition has Pokémon species that are not in the other edition. Thus, trading Pokémon between players is an essential element of the gameplay. This feature has been available since the very first games through direct console connections; in modern titles, trading is mainly done over the Internet.
As of 2019, 8 generations of games have been released in the series; modern editions for home consoles are exclusively released on the Nintendo Switch.
