The action takes place in an open world, giving the player a high degree of freedom to choose story and side missions, explore the game space, and more. In this regard, the series is often compared to another hit from Rockstar — Grand Theft Auto; however, Red Dead Redemption is not just "GTA in the Wild West," it is an independent project with its own unique atmosphere and features. All games in the series have received very high praise, including for their rich storyline, detailed game world, and interesting gameplay solutions.

The predecessor of the Red Dead Redemption series was the first game in the Red Dead series — Red Dead Revolver, released back in 2004. This game is not connected to the subsequent parts in terms of plot, but it sets the main style and gameplay features. The first Red Dead Redemption was released in 2010 exclusively for PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. The newest game in the series (as of 2019) is Red Dead Redemption 2, a prequel to the first part; it was also initially released on consoles but was later ported to PC. This installment turned out to be not only the most successful in the series but also one of the most successful games in the history of the industry, breaking several sales records and receiving numerous prestigious awards and accolades.
