The action takes place in a sci-fi setting, with most characters designed in a corresponding style, although there are exceptions like ninjas. Characters are divided into three main classes, but each hero has their own combat style features and unique abilities, giving players a wide choice of preferred tactics, resulting in well-balanced gameplay. The total number of game modes exceeds fifteen (including variations of the "Arcade" mode), ranging from the simplest deathmatch for 6 or 8 participants to complex missions requiring precise team coordination. There is also a training mode that allows solo play against bots.

Overwatch received very high ratings from critics and the gaming community for its gameplay, character roster, design, and overall atmosphere. The game is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and is released in several editions differing in additional content — primarily in terms of available extra content, but there are also collector's editions with themed items and accessories.
