Mortal Kombat

— an iconic fighting game series that emerged during the arcade era and became one of the most successful franchises in the genre. The storyline and setting heavily utilize themes of Eastern mythology and Asian martial arts, and the game also includes elements of fantasy and science fiction. The "calling card" of the series is the system of finishing moves on a defeated opponent by quickly pressing a specific series of buttons. Initially, this system was introduced with the Fatality mode (a spectacular and bloody killing of a half-dead opponent), and later other special moves appeared, such as Animality (transforming the winner into a beast), Brutality (finishing with a long series of diverse strikes), and even "peaceful" Babality (turning the loser into a baby) and Friendship (offering friendship). Additionally, the games are famous for a large number of secrets, references, and "Easter eggs."

The modern era for the Mortal Kombat series began in 2011 with the release of MK9 and the reboot of the series. As of 2019, excluding this game, two more installments have been released in the series — MK X in 2015 (plus the XL expansion a year later) and MK 11 in 2019. The games are available on PC, PS, and Xbox, with the ninth installment also on PS Vita, and the eleventh on Switch.
