Metal Gear Solid

— the famous action-adventure game series with a focus on stealth, released by Konami under the direction of the renowned game designer Hideo Kojima (until his departure from the company in 2015). The first game in the series, released back in 1987, became the progenitor of the "stealth action" genre, and the term itself was coined specifically for it. This gameplay style has been preserved in most of the sequels: the player must avoid confrontations with enemies as much as possible, using not brute force, but primarily stealth and cunning.

The games in the series are set in the modern world, spanning from the 1960s to the near future. The setting includes both real and fantastical technologies, as well as elements of alternative history. The series has received high praise for its plot and atmosphere. The plots of most games are complex, intricate, and ambiguous, and throughout the gameplay, the player repeatedly faces moral dilemmas, difficult decisions, and challenging themes such as the ethics of using force, the "dark side" of cutting-edge technologies, political and military expediency, and so on. The abundance of in-game cutscenes adds to the atmosphere of the events.

As of 2019, the Metal Gear series includes about a dozen main games and as many additional ones, as well as numerous expansions and remakes. All main series games are available on PlayStation, and the two latest titles (as of 2019) are also available for Windows and Xbox (360 and One).
