The game is similar in general principles to the equally famous GTA series — in particular, the action takes place in an open world in the form of a city and its surroundings, with a large number of vehicles available, most of which can be stolen or acquired in other ways, and the game character operates in the criminal world, engaging mainly in illegal activities. However, Mafia is noticeably different in both atmosphere and a more strict linearity of the plot (although optional side missions are also present in this series). The action takes place in a retro setting (the Great Depression in the first part, post-war times in the subsequent ones), and the main character, as a rule, becomes disillusioned with the mafia lifestyle in one way or another during the course of the game.As of 2019, the series includes three main (numbered) games available on PC, PS, and Xbox, as well as two mobile titles and several DLCs for Mafia II and Mafia III. All main games have been praised for their atmosphere and overall storytelling, but the overall rating from critics and most fans decreases from the first to the third part.
