Fallout

— a series of role-playing games based on the iconic post-apocalyptic setting, representing America after a nuclear war in 2077. One of the striking features of the design of Fallout is retrofuturism: fantastic cars, weapons and gadgets are created in the style of science fiction of the 40s and 50s of the twentieth century, and the musical accompaniment is chosen in the same spirit. In total for 2019, the series includes 9 games, of which 4 games are the main series and 5 spin-offs. However, one of the spin-offs, Fallout New Vegas, is included by many in the main series: it uses the same engine and game mechanics as Fallout 3 (with a number of improvements and improvements), was released by the same developer and fully complies with the canons of the universe.

The first two Fallout games, released in 1997 and 1998, were classic turn-based RPGs. Starting with Fallout 3, the games in the main series received a full 3D experience, first/third person view, and VATS (a kind of controlled pause with aiming), replacing the turn-based system. The newest (for 2019) of the main games in the series, Fallout 4, was released in 2015 for the main desktop platforms, and in 2017 also for virtual reality devices. The entire main series (including New Vegas) has been a hit with fans and critics, but the online multiplayer game Fallout 76, released in 2018, received mixed reviews; one of the key mistakes of this part is the complete absence of non-player characters — the gameplay is based solely on the interaction of players with each other.

Another spin-off worth mentioning is Fallout Shelter, a free-to-play game for desktop and mobile that allows the player to take on the role of a shelter keeper.
