Dark Souls

— a series of open-world action-RPGs from Japanese developer FromSoftware. The action takes place in a medieval fantasy setting; the plot in each game is quite minimalistic, but it cannot be called a background. An interesting point is the combat system: the creators initially provided for the high complexity of the battles, so that the player, constantly dying, learned from his own mistakes. The game world is "seamless", the locations are not separated by well-defined boundaries; however, starting from the second part, in order to increase the level, the player will have to look for the centre of the location. The role of control points is played by bonfires (not available at every location). There is a multiplayer, which implements several interesting features. So, when a player is online, another player can invade his world in order to kill the character of this player or complete a certain task; PvP zones are not marked openly, they can only be identified by indirect signs (the fact of an invasion); there are groups (the so-called "covenants"), on participation in which the goals of the invasion depend.

The first installment in the series was released in 2011 for PS and Xbox, ported to Windows in 2012, and remastered in 2018 for all three platforms plus the Nintendo Switch. The second part was released in 2014 (for PS4 and Xbox One — in 2015), the third — in 2016.
