The action takes place in a medieval fantasy setting; the plot in each game is quite minimalist, but it cannot be called just a backdrop. An interesting aspect is the combat system: the creators initially designed the battles to be highly challenging, so that players, constantly dying, learn from their own mistakes. The game world is "seamless," with locations not divided by clearly defined boundaries; however, starting from the second part, players need to find the center of the location to level up. Bonfires serve as checkpoints (not present in every location). There is multiplayer, which includes several interesting features. For instance, when a player is online, another player can invade their world with the aim of killing that player's character or completing a specific task; PvP zones are not openly marked and can only be identified by indirect signs (the fact of invasion); there are factions (so-called "covenants"), and the goals of invasions depend on participation in them.The first part of the series was released in 2011 for PS and Xbox, ported to Windows in 2012, and remastered in 2018 for all three platforms plus Nintendo Switch. The second part was released in 2014 (for PS4 and Xbox One in 2015), and the third in 2016.
