— a series of first-person shooters, one of the classic and most famous representatives of the genre. The main games in the series are produced by three developers — Activision, Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games; at the end of 2019, there were 16 such games, plus 10 spin-offs from other creators, mainly for mobile platforms. The series was started in 2003, the first released game was dedicated to the theme of the Second World War; more recent titles also cover covert operations during the Cold War (Black Ops sub-series), modern warfare in alternative history (Modern Warfare sub-series), wars in the near future (Ghosts, Advanced Warfare) and space warfare (Infinite Warfare). Initially, the creators paid great attention to the single-player campaign, later the focus shifted noticeably towards multiplayer; here it is worth mentioning the original Zombie co-op mode, introduced in 2008 in Call Of Duty: World At War, and in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, the creators abandoned the story campaign altogether. The main games in the series have been released for all major desktop platforms — PC (except Call Of Duty 3), PS, Xbox, many — also under the Wii. Call Of Duty's direct competitor is the Battlefield series.
