The first game in the series, released in 2002, had a purely multiplayer format; a single-player mode (with bots) was available, but the main format remained multiplayer battles. A full-fledged single-player campaign appeared only in 2008, in Battlefield: Bad Company; this mode is present in most of the later games, but the key "feature" of Battlefield is precisely the multiplayer, with a special emphasis on team play and the use of various vehicles.The main competitor to Battlefield is considered to be Call Of Duty, but these series cannot be called identical — each has its own features.
