The most popular use of a flash is to illuminate at dusk or in the dark (for example, in the evening or in a dark room). It can also be useful when shooting against bright light, when the face is in shadow and without additional illumination it would be hard to see.
Note that in some smartphones, the screen can play the role of a flash for the front camera — at the time of shooting, it lights up with a bright white light. However, this feature is not considered a flash.
