This colour depth allows you to display 2^8 = 256 shades for each base colour (red, green, blue) and 256 * 256 * 256 = 16.7 million different shades in total. It is 8-bit monitors that are most popular nowadays: this colour rendering quality is more than enough for games, watching movies, office use and other tasks that do not involve professional work with colour, while the screens themselves are relatively inexpensive.
