Like regular Surface tablets and Surface Go, Microsoft's hybrid laptops are positioned as premium products designed for business and corporate use, as well as complex work and creative tasks. Simply put, Surface Book will be equally useful to both the designer and the entrepreneur.

At the heart of these gadgets are the proprietary PixelSense Display touchscreens, which are attached to the body using an unusual Fulcrum hinge with a magnetic support. Surface laptop displays are based on IPS-matrices with a higher resolution (most often 3240x2160 or 3000x2000 pixels) and the original 3:2 aspect ratio, which is tailored for working with texts, graphics and tables. The important features of Surface Book laptops include their modest weight and dimensions, excellent battery life, fast charging support, advanced biometric security, excellent microphone and conference camera, up-to-date wireless modules and a proprietary magnesium alloy case.

In 2021, Microsoft launched the third generation of Surface Book laptops with 13-inch PixelSense Displays, an improved Fulcrum signature hinge, and a traditional detachable screen unit. Unlike the first and second generation devices, the Surface Book 3 has a more modern Intel Core i5/i7 processor and a more powerful NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti caliber graphics card, while the maximum amount of RAM has increased to 32 GB. As before, the graphics card is hidden in the keyboard block and is activated only when the Surface Book is used as a regular laptop. In tablet mode, the processing of three-dimensional graphics falls on the shoulders of the graphics card integrated into the processor.
