Its presence is specified because not every modern laptop is equipped with such socket: it is quite large and may simply not fit into case of small thickness. As for the application, the LAN connection is somewhat less convenient than the wireless Wi-Fi channel — in fact, because of the need to pull the cable; on the other hand, wired connection gives more reliability and higher actual speed (with the same theoretical maximum).
Regarding the theoretical maximum speed, it is worth noting that the LAN connector may differ in this indicator. At the same time, faster connection not only reduces data transfer time, but also connection delays, however, it is also more expensive. Thus, the LAN version with support for speeds up to 1 Gbps has become the most widespread in modern laptops: at relatively low cost, such an interface is more than enough for domestic use, and for online games and other tasks demanding communication quality. There are also more advanced versions of LAN (up to 10 Gbps) — however, they are rarely used, mainly in single top-end configurations.
