Let's recall that PCIe slots are traditionally used to connect graphics cards and other expansion cards; additionally, PCIe mode is used in other interfaces (for example, Thunderbolt for external peripherals and M.2 for internal SSDs). Version 4.0 was introduced in 2017 and implemented in specific devices only in 2019. It provides double the data transfer rate of the preceding PCIe 3.0 — 1969 MB/s per PCIe lane (resulting in 31.5 GB/s for PCIe 16x of this version). At the same time, PCI Express 4.0 slots can accommodate cards from earlier versions — only the working speed will be limited by the capabilities of these cards.
