MZ-V8P1T0BW

Increased SLC buffer volume. High MTBF. Proprietary Magician software. Bus PCIe 4.0.

The Samsung 980 PRO Family 1TB Internal SSD is a high performance SSD in the upper price range. It is made in a compact M.2 2280 form factor, has a light weight (about 7 grams) and small dimensions (22x80 mm), which allows it to be installed even in thin laptops. It is recommended to use the product in desktop or laptop computers with high requirements for data processing speed.

First of all, the Samsung 980 PRO MZ-V8P1T0BW 1 TB SSD is able to interest gamers who can quickly launch games without waiting for a long time to load levels. It is also suitable for professional systems used for working with graphics, analyzing large data sets, etc. The high bandwidth of the drive (up to 7000 MB/s when reading and up to 5000 MB/s when writing) is primarily provided by a modern hardware base: 3D TLC NAND flash memory and a proprietary Elpis controller. Plus, it uses a fast PCIe 4.0 4x interface and the NVMe protocol. The advantages of the model also include a high level of reliability and durability, which is confirmed by both a 5-year official warranty and a 600 TB mean time between failures (TBW).

Model overview based on user reviews
The Samsung 980 PRO SSD is highly praised for its exceptional speed and performance, making it one of the fastest and most advanced SSDs on the market. Users appreciate its ability to quickly load operating systems and large applications, with some noting Windows starts in just a few seconds. However, a common concern is its tendency to overheat, especially without a heatsink, which is strongly recommended for optimal performance. The SSD is considered expensive by some, but many believe it is worth the investment for those who need high-speed data processing. Compatibility with PCI-E 4.0 is highlighted as a benefit, although users caution that it may not be necessary for all setups, particularly if not paired with high-end motherboards like the X570. Overall, while the Samsung 980 PRO is a powerful SSD, potential buyers should consider their system's cooling capabilities and whether they can fully utilize its speed.

He's not worth his money
1 February 2021
Overall, it's not worth the money because:
1. Random write with small packets is even slower than cheap Chinese products
2. It heats up - which it should.
3. Costs twice as much as the previous version
4. Warranty resource 600 TBW

Conclusion - if you do not have X570 or at least X550 then you absolutely don't need it, and if you do, the impressive read speed is unlikely to be significant for you.

Yes, compared to my Smartbuy 1TB, the Samsung 1TB won in pgbench 13 Postgres in TPS count by one and a half times over, but in reading by only 10% (Debian test, AMD kernel). So there's no point in putting it on a server due to its resource, and there are no servers with PCIe 4.0 yet. And in games with the lowest level, there's absolutely no difference.
Read and write speed for large files.
Crystal Disk, something like this:
6380 / 4952
5583 / 4999
3075 / can't remember
85 / 182
I also have another 1TB SDD, the cheapest Smartbuy on some crappy controller. So, in CrystalDisk, the last line with the write speed on it is higher (182 for Samsung vs. 224 for Smartbuy). The total for Samsung is better, but the price is 10k higher. For what??? The same 600TBW.

And it heats up in CrystalDisk to 61 degrees, so a heatsink is a must-have.

Only take this with a radiator if you don't want your PC to overheat.
softness, yakness
without a heatsink, this SSD drive heats up so MUCH that it feels like this thing could get hotter than hell.
Take only mothers under 570 and above!

Guys or ladies!!! If you DO NOT have mothers from 570 and above, where PISIai 4.0 is JUST starting to work normally, IT MAKES NO SENSE TO TAKE IT! Take without Pro with 2500-3000 km.h
a company worthy of attention in terms of quality
It gets hot, but X570 and higher have their excellent heatsinks, so for me this is not significant

A new round of evolution

Samsung's EVO and PRO series SSDs have slowed down a bit, but they are still an example of constant optimization. For example, in the 980 PRO model, the company's engineers tried to solve one of the main problems of modern M.2 SSDs - the fast filling of the memory buffer, due to which the read or write speed significantly decreases over time. By increasing the SLC buffer to 1024 MB, the drive is able to maintain the passport read and write speeds longer. Well, as is customary with Samsung, you will have to pay a little extra for progress.

PCIe 4.0 bus support

So, the Samsung 980 PRO is running Samsung's proprietary Elpis controller, which is designed to work with the next generation PCIe 4.0 interface. The fourth version has a much higher bandwidth, which resulted in a serious increase in the linear speed of writing and reading (5000 and 7000 Mb / s, respectively). The IOPS figures are almost double the 970 EVO Plus. Traditionally, high-end flash memory is used for drives of this level, which can withstand many rewrite cycles. For a model with a capacity of 1 TB, the manufacturer promises up to 600 TB before failure, and backs up his words with a 5-year warranty.

Proprietary software

Separately, it is worth noting the unique Magician software that comes with the drive, which expands the possibilities of using the drive. In addition to optimizing the speed of work, monitoring the health of the controller and checking the TBW in it, for example, you can adjust the balance between the capacity and durability of the drive. Using the Over Provisioning slider, the user can set the size of the SSD spare area, which will be available all the time, due to which the NAND flash memory will wear out more slowly and evenly.
