Monochrome

— a display that uses a single colour (other than the background), such as light characters on a dark background, or vice versa. Sometimes such screens are also called "black and white", but this is not entirely true — there are other colour options (for example, a green or yellowish image on a black background).

Anyway, monochrome displays are as simple and inexpensive as possible. In addition, they usually do not have a high resolution — and this, in addition to reducing the cost, also reduces power consumption and has a positive effect on the battery life of the gadget. At the same time, the set of features of such a display can be both simple and very diverse, so such displays can be found even in fairly advanced wearable devices. Nevertheless, monochrome screens are generally inferior to colour ones both in terms of overall functionality, and in terms of ease of reading information and general “aesthetic” appearance; and thanks to the development of technology, the difference in price today is quite small (often it is completely invisible against the background of the price of gadgets in general). So nowadays, single-colour screens can be found mainly in two categories of wearable devices: the simplest low-cost solutions, where such display is chosen based on price reduction, as well as devices (including quite expensive ones), where minimum power consumption and high battery life are prioritized.
