In the classic version of 7.1 sound, two additional channels are located on the sides of the listener — thus, not two (as in 5.1), but four speakers are responsible for the side and rear parts of the sound stage, which has a positive effect on reliability. In addition, other, more specific variations of 7.1 may be supported in AV receivers — for example, with two additional front speakers (left / right of centre or above the main front channels), with an additional rear channel and a centre height channel, etc. These nuances should be clarified according to the characteristics of each specific device.
