3G modem

At the same time, the term "3G", usually, refers to UMTS networks that are common in Europe and the post-Soviet space — in other words, the same networks that mobile phones operate in these regions. Such connection supports data transfer rates from 2 Mbps to 70 Mbps (depending on the technologies implemented in particular network); In fact, this means that from the user's point of view, Internet access over 3G connection is often indistinguishable from Wi-Fi or LAN connection. At the same time, it is worth noting that more advanced standards are gradually replacing 3G communications — primarily LTE 4G (see the relevant paragraph). Therefore, the 3G modem in modern laptops is practically not used as separate function — it is usually provided as an addition to the 4G connection (more precisely, the 4G modem also provides 3G compatibility).
