Housing illumination

— decorative illumination of the mouse body. The main function of this function is aesthetic: it gives the device an unusual appearance. This is especially true for game models (see "Device"); in fact, most mice with this feature fall into this category. However, backlighting can also perform quite practical functions — at least its absence when a mouse is connected indicates problems, and in some models, changing the colour of the lighting is used as an indicator of the current resolution (see "DPI value indicator").

The most advanced models may provide multi-colour RGB backlighting, sometimes with additional effects such as synchronization (see the relevant paragraphs).
