Optical mouse

— the most inexpensive and widespread technology used in modern mice. Such devices are built on the principle of a digital camera: a special LED illuminates the surface under the mouse, and an optical sensor “views” this image through the lens and, based on the movement of the surface in the field of view, determines the direction and speed of the mouse movement. Modern optical sensors are somewhat inferior to laser sensors in terms of resolution and positioning accuracy, but they are more versatile and can work correctly on a wide variety of surfaces — sometimes quite non-standard (fur, polished metal, glass, etc.).
