Trackpad

— the trackpad (or “touchpad”) is a touchpad with a diagonal of several centimeters. The cursor is controlled by moving a finger across the surface, the click function can be performed by a separate button or by tapping on the touchpad; many models are able to recognize special gestures and multi-finger touches at once.

In general, the functionality of such manipulators is somewhat limited compared to traditional mice — for example, they are very poorly suited for games. On the other hand, trackpads can be used on any surface where it is possible to stably set the device — including soft, mirrored, transparent, etc., where conventional mice do not work well. In addition, the touchpad remains stationary during operation, which in some conditions can also be an advantage. The trackball provides similar features (see the relevant paragraph); it has its advantages, however, the operation of the touchpad is more intuitive and such devices are easier to learn for inexperienced users.
