Programmable Buttons

— the ability to reprogram individual mouse buttons to your liking.

This possibility is usually carried out through a special service programme designed for a specific mouse model (or several similar models). Most models with this feature fall into the category of gaming mice (see "Device"), and the programming options are usually quite extensive. In particular, in many models, a certain button can be assigned not just an action, but a whole sequence of actions (for example, a combo series in a fighting game or action game). However, the matter is not limited to games — programming is often available for simple everyday tasks like working in a web browser.

We emphasize that this function should not be confused with the usual remapping — binding certain actions to mouse buttons using the internal settings of the game (or another programme). Firstly, remapping is carried out by means of the game / programme itself, and not by a separate tool. Secondly, its availability depends on the settings of the game / programme, and not on the mouse model. Thirdly, the possibilities of remapping are quite limited — in particular, it is carried out according to the principle of "1 action per 1 button".

It is also worth saying that programmable buttons are found in models with any number of keys — even in the simplest two-button mice. In the latter case, the scroll wheel usually lends itself to reconfiguration; in addition, to expand the possibilities, more specific programmable actions can be provided — for example, a combination of pressing a certain key with moving the mouse in one direction or another.
