Video reviews

Tamron's long-range "gun" turns any photographer into a paparazzi or a wildlife hunter — shooting with such an impressive range of focal lengths can be done at a great distance from the target.

Giant

The gigantic body of the model is equipped with a support with a ring mount, with which the lens can be mounted on a tripod. Otherwise, the lens, with its two-kilogram weight, shifts the centre of gravity of the camera and constantly strives to “nod”. From the controls on the body, the user has access to the focus and zoom rings, as well as a trio of mechanical switches: AF / MF focus mode selection, FULL / 15m / ∞ focus range limiter and a VC ON / OFF vibration reduction system on / off slider. A separate place is allocated for the zoom lock.

Picture

In terms of sharpness in the centre of the frame, the lens scores high across the entire range of focal lengths. At the same time, maximum detail can be achieved at an aperture value of f / 8. Things are not so rosy with the edges of the pictures — if there are no complaints about their sharpness at the short end, then with an increase in the focal length, the picture at the edges inevitably blurs. To a greater extent, this applies to full frames (cameras with a full-frame matrix), because the angle of view of cropped cameras is a priori smaller.

Second generation

In September 2016, instead of the telephoto lens, the second generation of the lens was released with even greater stabilizer efficiency (compensation up to 4.5 exposure steps), a reduced minimum focus distance (2.2 m versus 2.7 m for the version in question) and improved autofocus. The most serious complaints from the owners of the telezoom were presented to the focus system due to its slowness. In the squad of minuses of the model, many also write down the large diameter of the front lens (95 mm), which negatively affects the cost of compatible filters.

Unique features

For its value, the lens provides truly unique features. And there are practically no serious competitors with a similar set of focal lengths. With a stretch, only the Sigma AF 150-500mm f / 5.0-6.3 APO DG OS HSM with a shorter distance at the maximum zoom range can be listed as such.
