The Lightning (8 pin) is a proprietary connector used in Apple portable devices — specifically, iPhones and iPads. The 3.5 mm mini-Jack is the most popular modern audio connector that most headphones and speakers for portable devices are designed to fit. "Lightning — 3.5 mm" format devices typically are adapters (see "Type") for connecting headphones and speakers with a mini-Jack plug to a Lightning connector. The need for such adapters arose since 2016 when Apple phased out the 3.5 mm connectors in iPhones, with plans to apply this approach to other Apple gadgets in the future.
