The 3.5 mm mini-Jack port is popular primarily in portable and computer technology—pocket players, mobile phones, PC and laptop sound cards. The mini-Jack plug, in turn, is used in the overwhelming majority of headphones and headsets; it is also popular in computer speakers and portable audio equipment. In all cases, we are talking about an analog audio signal; accordingly, the RCA connectors on the other end are used specifically for linear analog audio.

However, the design and thus the application of cables of this type can vary. For example, the "3.5 mm plug – 2RCA" option is intended for connecting an external signal source (for example, the same smartphone) to a line or other similar input of an audio system. A cable with a 3.5 mm socket and 2 RCA connectors, in turn, serves as an adapter for connecting headphones or computer speakers to an RCA line-out (in case the audio system doesn't have its own mini-Jack socket). The combination of a mini-Jack plug with a single RCA connector can be useful for outputting multichannel sound from a computer to external audio: many modern sound cards have 6 or even more 3.5 mm outputs, capable of working similarly to RCA when playing multichannel sound, based on the "one channel per connector" principle.
