At the same time, in oblong plugs (USB, HDMI, etc.), the direction of the bend is different – both along the long side of the connector ("along"), and along the short one ("across"); and in the second variety, the plug can generally be made rotatable, with the possibility of transformation from straight to bent. As for the adapters, they are usually bent "across" and may also have a hinge that allows you to change the angle of rotation.
In any case, the right angle design is useful primarily in cramped conditions, when there is some kind of obstacle opposite the connection port: a bent cable/plug will fit where there may not be enough space for a classic straight one.
