The third generation of the non-replaceable lens compact G1 X series saw a mini-revolution: the camera got a 24-megapixel APS-C image sensor, similar to those that are installed in cropped DSLRs. Accordingly, much more can be squeezed out of it than from sensors of a smaller physical size of related camera models. Dust and water protection appeared in the case of the prosumer, and from the visible improvements in the hardware, it is worth highlighting the presence of an electronic OLED viewfinder and a swivel display in all axes with support for touch input.

The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III lens has a 3x optical zoom — shooting on it is carried out in the range of equivalent focal lengths of 24-72 mm (the maximum aperture changes from f / 2.8 to f / 5.6). The lens has optical stabilization to help compensate for up to 4 stops of exposure when shooting handheld or in low light conditions. Video is recorded on the camera in FullHD resolution at 60, 30 or 24 fps. It is advisable to buy a set of interchangeable batteries in the kit for the camera, since on a single charge of a standard battery it can only take about 200 shots.
