Nikon Z50 kit 16-50 (VOA050K001)
![]() |
The first-born of cropped Nikon mirrorless cameras with an APS-C sensor. The model for the camera was the advanced SLR camera Nikon D500, from which the model borrowed a 21 MP image sensor. Well, the model spied on the Z mount from colleagues in the Nikon full-frame mirrorless fleet. The updated Expeed 6 processor raised the bar for the sensitivity of the matrix to the limits of 100-51200 ISO units, it can be expanded with hardware up to ISO 204800.
The automatic focus system in the on-board equipment of the Nikon Z50 kit has 209 phase autofocus points that cover about 85% of the frame. From now on, the camera is able to follow the subject of shooting by eyes and faces. In the reportage genre of photography, you should expect to squeeze the rate of photography up to 11 fps from a mirrorless camera (together with tracking autofocus).
The model is equipped with an electronic viewfinder, 3.2-inch touch screen, built-in flash and hot shoe. Videos are recorded on the camera in a maximum resolution of 4K at 30 fps, but with a 1.5x crop. The camera is assembled in a housing with protection from dust and moisture. A stabilized zoom with a range of focal lengths of 16-50 mm and a “floating” aperture of f / 3.5-6.3 is assigned to the role of a whale lens.

I really wanted a cool camera, but I really didn’t want a bulky body + lens. About 4 years ago I had an Olympus and a DSLR. I was tormented with his weight, the impressions remained for the rest of my life. There was a choice to take Fuji, and I almost did so, but I was stopped by the optics park, or rather the lack thereof. This Nikon is quite compact and fits very comfortably in the hand. The case is assembled with high quality, although not heavy, but weighty. The ergonomics and buttons are well thought out; together with the menu, they are very quickly mastered. It turns on almost instantly and immediately takes photos. Silent, no mirror. It was enough for me to take it for a walk a couple of times and try out almost all the functions and modes. Takes excellent photographs, good sharpness. The colors are rendered superbly. The most important thing is the pair of optics that Nikon has. I'm currently using the kit, but I'm planning to get a fix. The battery is normal. I didn’t check the amount of footage, but I don’t charge it often, about once every 7-8 trips. I take 100-120 photos per trip. I photograph mainly street art and landscape photography. I really like the photo in motion, plus it has fast autofocus, which helps. If you do a series, it shoots very quickly, but the buffer lasts for 4-5 seconds. It seems like a lot, but after filling the buffer the camera freezes for 7-10 seconds, which is already a minus. Evening photos are not bad. It works very well in the twilight, is not noisy at ISO 12800, which for me after the Olympus is just space. Very nice viewfinder. Everything is visible at 5+, and does not darken + the coverage is good. Excellent matrix with good color rendering. Super ISO (12800 without noise). The video is excellent. Compact and ergonomic. Super huge fleet of optics from Nikon. Fast autofocus. Easy control and mastering of settings. Rotating screen, although not super convenient. It works very quickly and turns on, literally in a second and you're done. A huge number of functions and settings. NOT the largest memory buffer. Sometimes a shutter speed of 1/4000 s is not enough and you want at least 1/8000, especially on bright sunny days. |
I bought this instead of the Nikon D7100 for home shooting. After the Nikon D7100, I was planning to switch from Nikon to either Canon or Fuji. The need to purchase absolutely everything anew stopped me. Decided to give Nikon another chance and I’m really glad I did. The experience is like night and day in everything. Especially in autofocus performance (eye and face detection) and working with the screen – everything is very, very convenient. The tracking autofocus works almost perfectly. This time, Nikon really showed a good level in almost everything – excellent control, excellent autofocus performance (I watched many reviews and tests and expected worse), eye and face detection is just fantastic – there are misses, but they are not critical, the camera size is pleasing despite shooting with AFS and AFP lenses. I recommend it to both beginner and advanced photography enthusiasts. The image color and skin tone are excellent, high working ISO, touch screen rotation, tap-to-shoot capability, highly flexible RAW, handling, grip, communication, 11 fps, video quality and settings for its price, size, autofocus performance, short flange distance allowing for adapter use of lenses from other systems. Weak battery, no headphone jack, limited number of compatible Nikon lenses, no log video, inability to operate while charging the battery, no screwdriver for old lenses, green autofocus light, laser autofocus assist doesn't work with old flashes. |

Nikon only bet on mirrorless cameras in 2018, when full-frame cameras Z6 and Z7 entered the arena of photographic equipment. A year later, with a small "tail", the brand's portfolio was replenished with a cropped Z50 model with an APS-C sensor.
Unification
The camera is unified with the full frames of the Z series, thanks to which, together with its “carcass”, you can use both full-frame and cropped optics. The model borrowed the image sensor from an advanced SLR brother — the Nikon D500 camera. This is a 21 MP image sensor, the sensitivity range of which is measured in the range from 100 to 51200 ISO units. With hardware, the upper ISO bar can be raised to a value of 204800. In fact, an acceptable level of noise in images is maintained when shooting at ISO up to 12800 units.
Fast autofocus
The on-board automatic focus system of the camera has 209 points covering 85% of the field of the future frame. The user has access to focus on eyes and faces, as well as tracking autofocus at a high “flight” speed, during which the camera develops a continuous shooting rate of up to 11 fps. The camera writes videos in the maximum resolution of 4K at 30 fps, but with a 1.5x image crop. Image stabilization will have to be done by handy means, since the Nikon Z50 does not have an in-camera stub.
Thought out to the smallest detail
The mirrorless camera has a handy grip, an electronic viewfinder, a 3.2-inch diagonal touchscreen that flips up to the selfie position, a hot shoe, and a built-in flash. Separate praise bothers the dust and water protection of the camera body. In addition to the kit, the camera comes with a stabilized zoom lens Nikon Z DX 16-50mm f / 3.5-6.3 VR, covering the most popular range of equivalent focal lengths of 24-75 mm.
