Extravagant design
It seems that router manufacturers have an unspoken rule — the more expensive and fancy the model, the more extravagant it should look. For example, if most models from TP-LINK look ascetic, then the Archer C5400X resembles either Lady Gaga at the Met Gala dress show, or a combat drone from Mass Effect. The massive black case with a grille and a luminous logo is “decorated” by 8 massive removable antennas, which have an asymmetrical shape and are painted in red and black. However, there is nothing surprising in this form, because this is actually the company's first gaming router, so the designers tried to distinguish it from other models.
Top equipment
The equipment of the TP-Link Archer C5400X is familiar to top devices — it is a tri-band AC5400 class router that creates three Wi-Fi networks (two at 5 GHz and one at 2.4 GHz). The maximum connection speeds for them are 2167 and 1000 Mbps, respectively, so the total Wi-Fi throughput theoretically reaches 5334 Mbps. However, a more important feature for the user may be the presence of 8 LAN gigabit ports at once. The maximum WAN speed is also 1 GB/s.
Advanced technologies to improve signal quality
The set of additional features is not far behind: the antennas are supplemented with Beamforming technology to focus the signal in the right direction, there is support for the RangeBoost function to increase the Wi-Fi coverage area (and it really works!), two USB ports, and a built-in 16 GB storage device for organizing a small file storage. Advanced users will be interested in the ability to configure link aggregation — WAN + LAN1 for faster Internet access and LAN2 + LAN3 for demanding clients on a local network like fast network storages.
Nearly perfect gaming router
Plus there are purely gaming chips. For example, Airtime Fairness technology allows you to quickly and accurately respond to requests from client devices, and NitroQAM can prioritize traffic for online games, relegating demanding torrent clients, IPTV and video hosting to the background. Well, the hardware platform with a 4-core processor and 1 GB of RAM is impressive here. In general, the Archer C5400X is an excellent gaming router in every respect, which lacks just a couple of small things to be perfect. For example, USB ports could support LTE modems to create a backup channel in case of interruptions in communication with the main one. Also, the file storage utility is not the most understandable and visual here.
