High-quality gaming closed stereo headset with a wired connection and the ability to virtualize multi-channel surround sound in DTS 7.1 Surround format. The SteelSeries Arctic headphone series is a new generation of gaming headsets with advanced features. Arctic 5 is the most balanced and sought-after model from the line, so we decided to pay attention to it.
Design and ergonomics
The manufacturer managed to create a rather stylish, neat design. Headphones look original and cute. The cups and headband are made of soft-touch plastic, pleasant to the touch, and the ear pads are covered with a special “breathable” fabric. Moreover, inside they do not have a foam filler, but also fabric, due to which excellent ventilation and comfort are achieved. Ears don't sweat. What frankly did not like was the fabric insert in the headband with an adjustable clip. A non-standard and very unusual approach to finding a comfortable position on the head.
Control panel and microphone features
On the left side there is a microphone mute button, a volume control wheel, connectors for a 3.5 mm audio cable and microUSB. The microphone in the model is non-removable, but if necessary, hides in the case, and the all-round orientation allows you to capture not only close sounds, but also those around you. Which in general is not good. But if you work with the noise reduction settings, you can get good audibility without extraneous sounds. In addition to the microphone, the cable has a ChatMix remote that is responsible for the priority of sound in games or voice chats. The thing is interesting, but cumbersome and not always working correctly. Fortunately, you can disconnect the cable from ChatMix and not use it.
7.1 Surround and backlight
But the USB cable opens up truly limitless possibilities for headphones. First, there is no dependence on a good sound card on a PC for good sound. Secondly, by installing special software on your computer, you can wind up this very sound any way you want, even 7.1 Surround (Windows only), and also choose any shade for the RGB LED backlight of the frame that borders the outer perimeter of the bowls, logo and microphone. In general, such is the light music.
General sound
As for the sound, in DTS Headphone X 7.1 mode, it sounds great in games and movies. In the musical sense, the headset works much better in stereo mode. But not five. The bass is assertive, elastic, the middle is slightly failed, and the tops are overstated and prone to whistling sounds. However, quite a normal picture for a good gaming headset.
