High reading speed. Large volume of SLC-array. High energy efficiency. Functional software.

High-performance internal SSD-drive with a capacity of 256 GB with high-quality 3D TLC NAND memory and SATA 3 connection interface. Made in a 2.5" form factor case with a thickness of only 7 mm. It is positioned as a base price product designed for installation in personal computers, laptops Micron's 32-layer 384Gb TLC 3D NAND flash memory is based on a quad-channel SMI SM2258 controller with a 256MB DRAM buffer based on LDDR3-1600.

Moderate power consumption Transcend SSD 230S TS256GSSD230S supports NCQ, TRIM, SMART monitoring and provides high-speed SLC write caching with a large buffer, which is enough for the vast majority of home and professional use scenarios. 560/520 Mbps for impressively fast downloads operating system, browsers with many open windows, resource-intensive applications and a wide variety of games. The manufacturer declares an impressive recording resource of 182 TB. This allows you to record 48 GB of data daily for 10 years.

Best in Economy Class

Transcend SSD230S, in our opinion, is the optimal budget SSD. It is built on the SM2258 controller, a joint creation of Silicon Motion and Micron. The latter is also responsible for the production of 3D TLC flash memory, which is also used in the SSD230S.

The third dimension

Compared to Toshiba's two-dimensional (planar) memory (used in SSDs with Phison controllers), Micron's three-dimensional memory is packed in several layers, allowing for larger-volume chips to be created. And the fewer chips an SSD uses, the faster the read speed (560 MB/s, which corresponds to the maximum throughput of the SATA III interface). This also has a positive effect on the power consumption of the SSD, which is important for laptops. In the future, 3D memory drives should also become cheaper than planar ones, but unfortunately, this has not happened yet.

Not all arrays are the same

The SM2258 controller provides a more efficient approach to the operation of a virtual SLC array. Its volume is not fixed, as in Phison models, but corresponds to a third of the disk volume (for a 256-gigabyte drive, respectively, 85 GB). You also need to look for a file that would not fit into the SLC array and, accordingly, would be written at a reduced speed (70 versus 520 MB/s).

Hard and soft

In addition, there is a 256-megabyte Nanya operational cache, which not only speeds up the SSD, but also extends its service life. Transcend should also be praised for its functional proprietary software, which allows you to check the "health" of the SSD, update its firmware and, what is especially useful, clone the operating system from the old disk to the new one. As a result, we get, although not a record, but still a very fast SATA-SSD with a price only slightly higher than the cheapest, but much less successful models.
