three dimensional memory

The Seagate BarraCuda 120 is a low cost internal SSD in a classic 2.5" form factor, 7mm thick and with a SATA connection interface. Built on the basis of 3D TLC chips, which implies a multilayer arrangement of cells to speed up access to different areas of memory (the delay does not exceed 1 ms). For better cooling, the drive is dressed in a metal case, while most competitors use plastic to save money.

Smart Algorithms

The BarraCuda 120's sequential read speed is 560 Mbps, which is the maximum throughput of a SATA 3 bus. Sequential write speed varies depending on the load: small and medium files are processed at 540 Mbps, while large ones are slower. The decrease in speed is explained by the virtual SLC caching algorithm, which combines a triple amount of TLC memory to increase its speed.

In the blink of an eye

Fortunately, it is extremely rare to write very large files, but small files — on the contrary, daily and even every minute (paging file, web browser cache). With this indicator — the number of input / output operations per second — the BarraCuda 120 is just fine: 90K IOPS. Anyway, low-cost MLC SSDs with a stable write speed, regardless of the amount of data, have not been produced for a long time. On the contrary, many competitors are gradually switching to even slower and faster QLC memory.

Purchase for many years

While the Seagate BarraCuda 120 reliability is the main trump card. MTBF is more than 1.8 million hours, which is confirmed by extended warranty up to 5 years (competitors have only 2-3 years). And the rewriting resource for a 500-gigabyte model is as much as 300 TB, that is, as much as a third of the volume of the entire disk per day for five years. The BarraCuda 120 line also includes 250GB, 1TB and 2TB models. A useful bonus will be proprietary Seagate applications: SeaTools for monitoring disk health and DiscWizard for cloning the OS from an old disk to a new one.

Suitable size

The BarraCuda 120 is not suitable only for the thinnest ultrabooks, where it simply does not fit. In this case, you need a miniature M.2 SSD, Seagate also has such in its assortment: BarraCuda 510 with a PCI-E 3.0 x4 bus and speeds up to 3400 MB / s and FireCuda 520 with PCI-E 4.0 up to 5000 MB / s. The latter, however, reveals its full speed potential so far only in desktop PCs with AMX X570 and TRX40 motherboards.
