The glasses are quite fragile and easily break from a strong blow, while the fragments are quite sharp; on the other hand, the likelihood of such an accident, even in ordinary watches, is very small, and sports models are often equipped with a protruding rim for additional protection of the dial. At the same time, this material costs not much more than plastic and can be used even in inexpensive models.
