The router supports the Wi-Fi 6 (ax) standard, is equipped with a powerful dual-core processor from Intel. To increase the bandwidth to file storages, the Link Aggregation function is provided.

One of the top models of high-speed wireless routers (routers) with increased transmitter power. A product of the 2019 model year, it is one of the powerful dual-band Wi-Fi 6 routers. It is positioned as a high-end model designed to create fast and reliable wireless and cable networks with low latency and impressively high data transfer rates . Equipped with four Gigabit Ethernet LAN cable ports (up to 1 Gbps) and a USB 3.2 Gen 1 connector for connecting external USB drives.

Leveraging Intel's powerful hardware platform based on the Intel WAV654 dual-core chipset, the TP-LINK Archer AX50 router delivers a theoretical throughput of up to 574Mbps in the 2.4GHz band and up to 2402Mbps in the 5GHz carrier band. It should be noted that in fact, values close to those given can be obtained only when using client devices that support the Wi-Fi 6 standard (MU-MIMO technology, OFDMA orthogonal frequency multiplexing and 1024-QAM modulation). Large detachable antennas and the successful implementation of Beamforming technology allow you to create an impressive Wi-Fi coverage area. The router supports Firewall, NAT, DHCP, FTP and file server functions. Can play the role of a network drive, supports the Time Machine backup function for Apple computers.

When there's nothing more to add

What do we usually mean when we talk about routers for gamers and streamers? Usually, this is a stuffed device like the Asus ROG Rapture with a price tag of under $500, a shocking appearance and tens of thousands of functions, the availability of which you most likely do not even know exists. The TP-LINK Archer AX50 that came to us for review is the exact opposite of everything that has been said: the appearance here is simple, the price tag is adequate, but the hardware will give odds to many more expensive models, and the entire list of skills will take a separate article.

4 powerful antennas with Wi-Fi 6

Therefore, let's go through the most important. First of all, the ability of the “archer” to work in Wi-Fi 6 networks comes to mind. So far, it’s more of a bonus, but in a year and a half there will be a must-have. The OFDMA protocol, which allows multiple devices to simultaneously use the same range without queues for data transmission, looks very promising. But this is just one of the features of the new standard. Traditionally, two bands are used for signal transmission: up to 574 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band and up to 2402 Mbps in the 5 GHz band. To enhance the signal, the router is equipped with four powerful antennas. If you need to transmit a signal over a cable, then 4 gigabit LAN ports are at your service. In general, there are no complaints about the quality of communication, the new protocol demonstrates excellent results in difficult reception conditions.

Traffic prioritization, automatic backup and dedicated USB port

We won’t even talk about the presence of a powerful processor and the integration of MU-MIMO with Beamforming, any non-low-cost router should be friends with them. Among other interesting features of the model, we highlight the ability to set parental controls and set priorities for traffic distribution. Useful for gamers, streamers, and cloud service subscribers like GeForce NOW. The final touch is a dedicated USB 3.2 gen 1 port with support for the Link Aggregation function, which allows you to connect an external SSD to the router and get a record-breaking home cloud or backup server (the router is friends with Apple Time Machine). In comparison to this, almost the only drawback was easily soiled plastic, which instantly collects prints and dust.
