For hardcore gamers
Immediately after the announcement of the new Comet Lake processors and their corresponding chips, Asus jumped in and showed as many as 17 new motherboards. Among them were the "reliable" Prime, the "inexpensive" TUF and, of course, the favorites of hardcore gamers from the ROG line. We tested the standard version of the ROG STRIX Z490-H in ATX format, which immediately catches the eye thanks to its stylish black colour with neat splashes of red.
High-quality power subsystem
One of the main features of the ROG line is the use of a top-end 14-phase power subsystem and high-quality circuitry. The PWM controller uses an eight-phase DIGI + VRM EPU ASP1900B chip. The VRM power subsystem of the main body is covered by two massive radiators with large fins, made of "raw" aluminium. Also in its arsenal you will find almost everything that the user needs for comfortable operation of a modern high-level gaming system. Namely, two M.2 interfaces with a cooling radiator, one M.2 for connecting wireless modules, a pack of third-generation USB ports (including one USB-C), an excellent SupremeFX sound system, a 2.5 Gbps network controller from Intel and traffic prioritization, several connectors for connecting LED strips and reinforced slots for installing video cards. Moreover, there are three PCI-E 16x slots, not two.
Automatic overclocking with ASUS AI Overclock Tuner
For overclocking, the UEFI BIOS Utility is used with the proprietary colour scheme for the ROG Strix Gaming series. At the same time, the board itself supports ASUS Ai Overclock Tuner proprietary technology, which, depending on the installed processor and the assessment of the efficiency of the cooling system, sets certain consumption limits and clock frequencies. It works quite aggressively, squeezing out, if not the maximum, then a value close to it. For example, the test Intel Core i5-10600K immediately rose in the boost from 4.8 to 5.1 GHz. Probably, it will not kill skillful manual overclocking, but still it is quite a useful thing for those who are looking for a motherboard to pair with a powerful processor, but do not want to mess around with voltage and frequency settings on their own.
