Traditionally, a man presents such a ring to his chosen one when proposing, and she, upon agreeing, wears the jewelry as a symbol of fidelity to her fiancé. In affluent circles in the West, there is a rule that the engagement ring should be quite expensive — at least at the level of three months' earnings of the groom; this tradition is gradually coming to us as well.
