— PP3 standard assumes a characteristic rectangular shape of the case, with a pair of contacts on one of the ends. The dimensions of such a case are 48.5 x 26.5 x 17.5 mm, and the contacts have a different shape to prevent connection with the wrong polarity. The standard voltage of the PP3 is 9 V, however, in rechargeable batteries this indicator may differ from the nominal value, and there are several options here at once. So, the most popular Ni-Mh batteries of this format in our time most often give out 8.4 V, sometimes – 9.6 V or 7.2 V; for Ni-Cd batteries, the 9.6 V option is not available, and Li-Ion cells only work at 7.2 V. However lithium-ion batteries have the highest nominal capacity – about 620 mAh (520 mAh in lithium polymer version) versus 175 - 300 mAh in nickel-metal hydride counterparts and only 120 mAh in nickel-cadmium. These indicators are noticeably lower than the values found in disposable PP3; the only exceptions are Li-Ion cells, which surpass even alkaline batteries in terms of formal capacity in mAh, and only slightly inferior to them in actual capacity (in Wh, taking into account the difference in voltage). However, it is worth remembering that Ni-Cd and Ni-Mh batteries are much better suited for devices with high current consumption than disposable cells; see "Technology" for details. And differences in voltage are initially taken into account in most devices designed for this standard; so in this regard, compatibility problems usually do not arise.
In general, this standard is not very popular, but it has its own scope, so batteries of the KronCRV9a type continue to be produced. They are successfully used in smoke and gas detectors, measuring instruments, microphones, electric guitars and effects pedals for them, etc.
