Mudguards

— fenders, or mudguards, are mounted over the wheels and protect the cyclist and others from water and dirt flying from the tyres — especially in bad weather. Since this function is far from always relevant, and the weight of the bike can be more critical than protection from dirt, the fenders are often made removable.
