At the same time, in full accordance with the name, the control is carried out by the pedals: to slow down, you need to press them back, in the opposite direction to normal movement. These brakes are simple, inexpensive, resistant to bad weather, moisture and dust, and require little to no adjustment. On the other hand, pedal control and the hub design itself are not suitable for any extreme riding, and when the chain falls off, the bike loses the brake altogether. In addition, coaster brakes are not compatible with classic derailleurs and can only be used on bikes with a single rear sprocket — single speed or equipped with a planetary rear hub. As a result, the main area of application for this type of brake today is urban models.
