Optimized for RAID and NAS.
Not suitable for the role of the main system disk.

Quiet and reliable built-in (internal) 3.5" form factor hard drive from the 2020 model WD Red HDD family. This line includes SATA3 drives with capacities ranging from 1 GB to 14 TB, whose firmware and design are optimized for long-term data storage tasks in NAS arrays. Such hard drives are adapted for use in SOHO NAS (small office/home office), are compatible with almost all modern file storage models, and are characterized by an impressive operational resource.

The WD NasWare Red WD40EFRX hard drive is positioned as a mid-price category product intended for use in home and office storage (up to 8 drives), connected to a local network via high-speed network cables or wireless connections. This model uses classic magnetic recording technology CMR, which allows for an enhanced data transfer speed, and the magnetic platters themselves rotate at a speed of 5400 rpm.

This ensures moderate heat dissipation (4.5W), which is important for creating multi-disk home NAS systems with quiet cooling. It can also be used as an additional HDD drive in a home PC, gaming, or multimedia system. It is not recommended for use as a system drive, but it is excellent for storing large volumes of work project files, video, photo, and high-quality audio content, as well as backups.

Model overview based on user reviews
The WD NasWare Red series is highly regarded for its quiet operation, reliability, and suitability for NAS systems. Users appreciate the cool and efficient performance of models like the 2TB and 4TB, although the 8TB model is noted to be audibly louder and warmer. The drives are praised for their fast access times and low energy consumption, making them ideal for continuous use in NAS environments. However, some users express concerns about the helium technology in larger models, which may affect long-term reliability. Overall, the WD NasWare Red is considered a reliable choice for data storage, especially in NAS setups, with a few users experiencing issues with specific models, but most reporting positive long-term performance.

Do not recommend.

Two 4TB drives in a zero RAID, I expected much more in terms of performance. After a year, one failed. The old 1TB Seagate with PS works faster.
It's hard to say, I bought it because of its former glory, but I was wrong.
Questionable reliability

The larger the volume, the more noise, heat, and less reliability.

2TB model - quiet, cool, reliable, 10 units in operation - 2 have already accumulated over 20,000 hours, the entire surface of the disks is good, with fast access time
4TB model - quiet in standby, barely audible in operation, warm
8TB model - quiet in standby, clearly audible in operation, hot up to 52 degrees
2TB model - quiet, cool, reliable
4TB model - quiet in standby, slightly audible in operation, warm
8TB model - quiet in standby, clearly audible in operation, fast
8TB model and above - the main drawback is helium, it is not eternal and constantly dissipates through the case. Unsuitable for "eternal" storage.
Happy with my choice

good quality product
I think the main advantage is that it is optimized for consumer NAS. They behave normally at work and remain cool. This is a very good indicator. This model is cheaper than buying the RE series. They are more reliable in operation than desktop models.
