When there’s no need to rush

Although the first PCIe 5.0 SSDs appeared a couple of years ago, Kingston didn’t rush to update its lineup, waiting until the technology matured, more compatible components arrived, and controllers stopped being plagued by overheating. Launched in spring 2025, the Fury Renegade G5 proved this approach right, immediately becoming one of the best high-end drives on the market.

Relatively cool and energy-efficient controller

Instead of the common PS5026-E26 controller, the company used the more modern Silicon Motion SM2508 with a 2 GB DRAM buffer and read speeds up to 15,000 MB/s. On paper, this is one of the fastest SSDs, maintaining stable speed even when filled, letting you work with large volumes of data without noticeable slowdowns. At the same time, it consumes less power and runs cooler compared to the E26.

Additional software

The downside is that despite high rated IOPS (2.2 million operations for both read and write), in random small-data access scenarios the drive can sometimes lag behind the Samsung 980 PRO and other last‑gen flagships. On the plus side, the package includes useful utilities: Kingston SSD Manager for monitoring drive health, temperature, and wear, as well as Acronis True Image with a one‑year license for migrating data to the new SSD.
