Onyx

— a fairly inexpensive semi-precious stone, a type of quartz (see related paragraph). Onyx is known as a mineral with a characteristic layered structure, however, usually, single-coloured stones are used in rings. This is because the inserts in the rings are too small to represent the specific structure, and the inclusion of another layer will look more like a defect than a feature of the material. In men's rings, mostly black varieties of onyx are popular; they can be combined with other stones.
