— device for tracking cooking time: the user sets the desired time, and at the end of it, the timer gives a signal. In some models, this device also turns off the oven, so that the risk of burning the dish is reduced to almost zero. The simplest mechanical timers with a rotary knob usually have an adjustment range from a couple of minutes to an hour (with an error of about 1 – 2 minutes due to the imperfection of the rotary knobs); in electronic timers, the range is wider and the accuracy is much higher.
