— bakelite is a type of plastic. It is very common as a material for handles in pans. Here, its main advantage is low thermal conductivity: such a handle can be handled with bare hands, without fear of getting burned, regardless of the temperature of the pan itself. Bakelite is also strong enough, does not ignite even under the influence of an open flame (although it can be charred), is scratch resistant and normally tolerates any detergents, including abrasive ones. Of the significant drawbacks, one can only note poor suitability for use in the oven — pans with this function rarely have bakelite handles, and then they are usually removable.
